About NEET -UG
National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a national competitive exam conducted for medical aspirants seeking admission to the top medical institutions in the country. It is considered one of the toughest entrance exams to qualify in India and over 20 lakh students attempted in NEET-UG 2023 exam.
As a part of the “One Nation One Examination” policy, the Indian government introduced NEET as a proposal to replace several exams with a single exam. From 2020 onwards, it was decided that NEET will be the only medical entrance exam required for admission to AIIMS and JIPMER institutions, replacing the previously existing system of several entrance exams administered at the state level. NEET exam is conducted offline in pen and paper mode in thirteen languages.
Under the direction of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, NTA (National Testing Agency) conducts NEET each year. NTA‘s sole focus is on conducting the examination fairly and providing the merit list and results to the DGHS.
What is NTA?
The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India has established the National Testing Agency (NTA) as an independent, autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organisation for conducting efficient, transparent and international standard tests in order to assess the competency of candidates for admission to premier higher education institutions.

What’s New in NEET 2023?
- NTA has removed the 25-year age restriction from the age eligibility requirements for NEET 2023.
- Revised NEET 2023 Exam Pattern: The NEET 2023 paper comprises four subjects which will include two sections- Section A and Section B. Section A will have 35 questions, and Section B will have 15 questions, making a total of 40 questions for every subject. Students have to attempt any 10 questions from Section B. So, there will be a total of 200 questions in the paper, out of which only 180 questions are to be attempted.
- Increase in Duration of Time: Students will now get an additional 20 minutes to complete the NEET 2023 question paper.
- Application Fee Increase: The application fee for the General, SC/ST/OBC categories has been increased by Rs. 100. The fee for NRIs, which was 7500 INR last year, is now 8500 INR.
- Reservation of Seats Through NEET 2023: For NEET 2023, the National Medical Commission has reserved 15% for the All-India Quota seats and 85% for the State Quota seats.
- NEET 2023 Exam Centres Increase: For NEET 2023, the authority has increased the total number of exam centres to 543 cities in India and 14 abroad.
- Six additional factors have been added to the already existing three factors in the tie-breaking formula.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG), is a single all-India pre-medical entrance test for students who wish to pursue undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS) and AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc.) courses in government and private institutions in India and also, for those intending to pursue primary medical qualification abroad.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the NEET exam once a year. NEET-UG is the single national level entrance test conducted for MBBS admission in India, as recognized by the Supreme Court of India.

- Total number of Questions: 200 (180 applicable questions for attempt)
- Total Marks: 720
- Marking Scheme: +4 for each correct answer & -1 for each incorrect answer
Total sections in the question paper: 3 (Two sections for each subject)
- Section A – 35 questions
- Section B – 15 questions (10 to be attempted)
Method to Predict Your Score in NEET-UG:
- Write down the serial number of questions asked in NEET 2023.
- Write 4 marks beside the serial numbers of questions you answered correctly.
- Write 1 mark beside the serial numbers of questions you answered incorrectly.
- Add up all 1’s to be the total negative marks, ‘N’.
- Add up all 4’s to be the total positive marks, ‘M’.
- Subtract N from M.
How the NEET UG ranks are calculated?
The NEET 2023 ranking is calculated based on the candidate’s score in the examination.
The higher the score, the better the rank. In the case of tiebreakers, the ranking is determined by the number of correct answers, followed by the number of incorrect answers.
In competitive examinations, what is the Percentile Score?
Percentile scores are determined by comparing an applicant’s performance to all other applicants who took the exam. It is neither a percentage score nor a raw score.

Analysis of the NEET UG 2022 Paper
It was stipulated that the difficulty level of the NEET 2022 exam was moderate to difficult level. Students can look into the subject-wise analysis of the NEET 2022 question paper.
- Physics Section –10-12% of the questions were tough, and there were more numerical questions in this section.
- Chemistry Section –The class 11th and 12th syllabus carried weightage in this section. It was said to be relatively easy to moderate level difficult.
- Biology Section –It was time-consuming even though it was easy. More than half of the questions were asked directly from NCERT textbooks.

There are a total of 542 medical colleges, 313 dental colleges, 914 AYUSH colleges, and 47 BVSc & AH colleges in India that will acknowledge NEET results. There is a total of 15 AIIMS campuses and 2 JIPMER campuses that also accept this exam score for admission. This year, admission to the B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing programme will also happen through the NEET exam; however, the seat matrix has not yet been made public.
NEET Eligibility Requirements 2023:
Candidates for the NEET UG 2023 entrance test are recommended to confirm that they meet the requirements given by NTA before submitting an application. Candidates are eligible for the exam if they meet the requirements listed below.
Nationality:
Citizens or applicants from the following nationalities may submit an application for NEET:
- Indian citizens
- Indian non-residents (NRIs)
- Indian citizens living abroad (OCI)
- Individuals of Indian Origin (PIO)
- Foreign Nationals
Age Limit
The following are the age restrictions or requirements for NEET candidates:
- By 31st December 2023, candidates must be at least 17 years old.
- The NMC has eliminated the upper age limit of 30 years for applicants in the reserved category and 25 years for general category candidates.
Minimum Educational Qualification:
The following educational requirements should be met by the applicants:
- The applicant must have completed Class 12 or its equivalent from a recognised board.
- Candidates may apply for NEET 2023 even if they will be taking the Class 12 exam or its equivalent in 2023.
- Candidates who have graduated Class 12 or its equivalent from an open school are also qualified.
Compulsory Subjects:
- Candidate must have successfully completed Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Candidates having Biology as an additional subject in their Class 12 or equivalent are also eligible.
Minimum Scores Needed to Pass the 12th Qualifying Exam:
- General Category: 50%
- PWD category: 45 per cent
- SC/ST/OBC: 40 per cent
Candidates have to fulfil these eligibility criteria without fail.
Preparation Tips for NEET-UG:
- First of all, aspirants should plan on how to get maximum time to focus on NEET-UG, your time should not be distributed in various activities.
- Find a right institution, where you get personalised guidance & mentoring to prepare well during class 11-12.
- Aspirants preparing for the NEET-UG exam should first familiarise themselves with the exam format, pattern, and syllabus.
- The preparation books for NEET -UG preparation must then be narrowed down. Candidates must use NCERT books in order to finish the topics in the syllabus.
- A schedule for NEET-UG preparation must be created by candidates. This needs to be adhered to in order to finish the preparation on time and have enough time to revise.
- The completion of mock tests and sample papers is a critical part of NEET UG preparation.
- Since each section in the exam has the same weightage, candidates should focus equally on each section to achieve a good result.
- Give the mocks to identify the weaknesses and work upon them to boost the exam scores.
- Here I must mention that the most of competitive exams are different from school exams.
